The English and Welsh Pitted Together for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by rugby legends including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in an identical group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in Australia. They are joined in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw mirrors their memorable meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Group Draws

Ireland and the Scots have likewise been drawn in a group once again, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they claimed a 36-14 victory, with their opponents unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each impressed as surprise packages in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Significantly, the victors of these two groups cannot meet holders and top-ranked South Africa until the final, assuming the South Africans win their own group.

Knockout Implications

If the pools conclude in line with the current world rankings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from the likes of the English and the Irish until the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match aimed at jump-start the event.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have drawn Italy, Georgia and Romania. The French team are grouped with Japan, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in 2023.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 round for the first time in the competition's existence.

While the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
