In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
