Larian Studios Reveal a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The anticipation surrounding the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio clarified that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team is likely designing a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it sparked the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable with a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to improvise both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in diverse methods, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, fans can anticipate more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
