New research reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying these drugs should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to original mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural changes.
