British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.
The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of entry passages leading to the facility... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.
The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.
Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This action shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.
UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," he added. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."
During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. says IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
