Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
